In a general bug out SHTF situation where concealing your weapon is not an issue, you're likely to be on foot and can only bring as much gear as you can cary on your person, I strongly believe that the SKS, in it's "as issued" unmodified state, is the best weapon. (I am not a fan of the aftermarket stocks and magazines.)The SKS is a superior gun to any other sniper. The SKS, atleast in my opinion is one of the most underrated and unnecessarily hated guns in all of DayZ, let me explain. The SKS is far superior to the Mosin at close and medium ranges as it's mag of ten and semi-auto fire can destroy a person before a Mosin can shoot more than two rounds, and now ...The SKS is (like already said) a very proven design. Do a bit of research before buying. The SKS is .308 caliber bullet. That bullet with a soft tip or a hollow point will put a threat on the ground almost immediately and it don't matter much where you hit it. For a true SHTF situation, the .308 is hard to beat.The SKS rifles can still be found in regular use in conflict zones across the globe. It is said that a lot of the SKS rifle has been imported into the USA since the 1980s. I am a huge advocate for .22 LR as a first firearm. Seriously; a 10/22 or similar rifle is fun, cheap, functional, and reliable... But, AFTER that, an SKS is a great entry into a "real" caliber. My first SKS was my first rifle after a 10/22. The SKS rifle fires 7.62x39 ammunition from a 10 round box magazine but detachable high cap mags are inexpensive and very easy to obtain. These are C & R Eligible When we first started in business in the late 80's we sold thousands of Chinese SKS rifles and as such, I have a soft spot for them..
