John deere 4020 problems

Mar 15, 2014 · I'm working on a syncro-range 1966 4020 that has developed hydraulic problems over the last several years. Most of the time it is extremely slow to raise the 3pt and cylinders (up to a couple minutes) , occasionally it will work fine. The steering and brakes seem to work ok.

We have 9 3020-4020 tractors and they all act as you describe.We just live with it because after 1 minute all the hyd. work fine,part of farming with 40-50 year old tractors.I don't start in the mornings like I did 25 years ago either.LOL. Nov 3, 2009. #1. I have an early 4020 and I just put an overhaul kit in the brake valve. I put everything back together following my JD service manual. Then I bleed the brakes. Now the brakes are totally locked up. The tractor won't move. But if I open the bleed screws, it will move. Remove the screw, install a plastic line on the fitting and start the tractor. Turn the steering wheel to the RH stop position and open the fitting slowly. Let oil bleed out the line until no bubbles are present then tighten the fitting. Be careful as the steering wheel may jump after the bubbles are gone. Recheck the steering.
